The Houston Rockets blast off into another season with high hopes, despite an offseason that sent Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Linn packing.
From an outsider's perspective Parsons and Linn leaving may loom large. But those familiar with the franchise know that both players were limited defensively. So much so, that in the Rockets postseason series against Portland, the Trail Blazers effectively went at both exclusively when they were in the game. Linn struggled to stay in front of Damian Lillard throughout the series. And it was Parsons who was easily rubbed off while trailing Lillard on his series-winning three-pointer.
In the place of each are two defensive-minded players. Patrick Beverly outplayed Linn in the Portland series, and brings a special defensive intensity to the point guard position. Terrence Jones will likely gain minutes in Parsons' absence. The gifted power forward will add some toughness to a frontline that already features the NBA's premier center, Dwight Howard. Houston had plenty off offense last year. This year's unit should be able to excel on both sides of the court.
None of this suggests that the Rockets will hurt for points. One thing is certain: No team with James Harden on it will ever struggle offensively. Harden cemented his place as the top shooting guard in the league last year leading his team in points, assists and steals. "The Beard" is a matchup nightmare around the league. And those watching his work on the U.S. National team this summer will note that he seems to have rededicated himself defensively. Turns out Harden can be a lock-down defender. If he brings that attitude to the NBA season, the Rockets can punch their ticket to the playoffs now.
Harden's productivity also helped bring about a resurgence in Howard's game. The talented center reminded everyone why they call him Superman in his first year in Houston. The Toyota Center featured more than on humbling dunk or rejection on behalf of Howard.
Coach Kevin McHale is looking to make another run at the title in 2015. Harden and Howard can get him there. But a renewed focus on defense may push this team over the top, and bring a world championship back to Houston.
