The Atlantic Division-champion Raptors are coming off one of the best seasons in franchise history, posting a 48-34 record in 2013-14 and the 4-seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Despite their first-round loss to the Brooklyn Nets in a hard-fought seven-game series, the Raptors are well positioned to continue their recent success in 2014-15.
Toronto was only one win away from advancing to the second round, losing 104-103 to the Nets in Game 7 at Air Canada Centre. As heartbreaking a way to bow out of the playoffs as that was, the Raptors have every reason to feel confident in their ability to repeat their performance as division champs this season.
The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are rebuilding; the New York Knicks are essentially biding their time until they can clear cap space for a major free agent bid in 2015; and the Brooklyn Nets lost Paul Pierce and have a new head coach. Outside of Toronto, all of the Atlantic Division teams are in flux.
Air Canada Centre seats 19,800 for Raptors home games—20,511 with standing room—and will likely be packed to capacity this season as the hometown fans come out to see Toronto defend its crown. Kyle Lowry is unquestionably the team’s best player now that he no longer has to split shot attempts with Rudy Gay, who was traded to the Sacramento Kings midseason last year. Alongside Lowry, teammates DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross, and Jonas Valanciunas all played major roles down the stretch last season and will look to provide the same level of support this year.
Patrick Patterson and Greivis Vasquez also had much to do with the team’s success late in the season after arriving from Sacramento via trade. The future is bright for the Toronto Raptors; with the core of players they currently have on the roster, and down years from their divisional opponents potentially forthcoming, another Atlantic Division title might be in the cards.

Toronto’s biggest acquisition in the offseason might have been its general manager. But he’s not going to yield many wins, not this NBA season.
So the Raptors appear to be stuck right where they always are: a team just hoping to make the playoffs and not much else. This might explain why fans aren’t filling Air Canada Centre seats like they used to. According to Forbes, Raptors ticket sales are down 2,600 per game from the 2007-2008 season. The good news? Toronto has recognized this and you can purchase cheap Raptors tickets, as the team slashed prices by as much as 40 percent.
And that might be a steal. Although the Raptors (34-48 last season) aren’t expected to compete for the Atlantic Division title, they should be exciting. Toronto boasts current NBA Slam Dunk champion Terrence Ross, as well as Demar DeRozan (2nd in 2010) and Rudy Gay (4th in 2008). With those high flyers, Raptors tickets should sell as fans line up to fill the 19,800 Air Canada Centre seats.
DeRozan is a player to watch. The 6-7 guard averaged 18.1 points per game and in his fifth year, he’ll only get better. If he can improve his 3-point shooting (28%), he’ll be a nightmare to stop. Teams can’t focus solely on DeRozan since the Raptors picked up Gay in a midseason trade. Gay, whose game is similar to DeRozan, led the Raptors in scoring with 19.5 in his 33 games with the team. Gay is a streaky shooter, but he might be more consistent after undergoing eye surgery to correct his poor vision.
Center Jona Valanciunas is an intriguing project. The Lithuanian-born center struggled early in his rookie season, but finished the year strong, as did the Raptors who went 7-3 in their last 10 games, including winning the last five. Ross, Amir Johnson and Kyle Lowry should be key contributors along with Tyler Hansbrough and Steve Novak. New general manager Masai Ujiri hopes that Hansbrough will add some toughness to the lineup and Novak is a 3-point specialist (44.5% the last two seasons) who will open up the floor. Ujiri also got rid of former No. 1 pick Andrea Bargnani, a move that will clear salary space for next season.
The Raptors may not be a top tier team, but they have pieces to compete and with their athleticism, they’ll be fun to watch. With three of the best dunkers in the game, one of the best sharpshooters off the bench and a little attitude from “Psycho T,” there’s no reason to not purchase Raptors tickets - especially those cheap Raptors tickets.
