2014-2015 Washington Capitals ticket preview

Here are five reasons to buy Washington Capitals tickets in 2014-15. Because before you buy Washington Capitals tickets, you want to know why it’s a good idea to buy Washington Capitals tickets. And as a discerning consumer, you have every right to demand those reasons.

 Alexander Ovechkin

Ovechkin is one of the world’s premier hockey players, and for good reason. He has scored no fewer than 32 goals in every one of his nine NHL seasons. We’ll say that again: no fewer than 32 goals in every one of his nine NHL seasons. There are many NHLers who go entire careers without scoring 32 goals in total, while Ovechkin has notched that many goals every year at a minimum. For fans seeking entertainment, they need not go further than the NHL arena in which Ovechkin is playing on any given night.

 Alexander Ovechkin again

Seriously, he scores a ton of goals. (We thought it bears mentioning a second time.) And he does it in a way that brings casual fans to the game, which the Washington Capitals are as pleased about as anyone.

There’s a new coach in town

Former Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz was fired by his former team this summer and was promptly hired by the Capitals to lead them to the top of the Metropolitan Division. Trotz brings over 500 career coaching victories to Washington, having been the only coach in the history of the Predators franchise. His tenure in Nashville lasted 17 years and was a testament to his ability to adapt his coaching techniques to suit different lineups throughout the years.

 Braden Holtby

Braden Holtby is again the clear no. 1 starter for the Capitals after the departure of G Jaroslav Halak (NYI) this summer. Holtby has bounced back and forth between starter and backup in his four professional seasons as a member of the Capitals, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the starter’s role from the first game of the season.

 Metropolitan Division as home

The Capitals routinely dominated the former Southeast Division prior to NHL realignment in 2013-14, but floundered somewhat as a member of the Metro. With one full season against tougher competition under their belts, the Capitals players will be prepared for a full season in their new division and will be looking to improve upon their fifth-place finish from last season.

Washington Capitals Tickets and Caps information

Our nation’s capital is home to one of the NHL’s most high-powered offenses, courtesy of superstar winger Alex Ovechkin, centerman Nicklas Backstrom and the newly signed former Toronto Maple Leaf, Mikhail Grabovski. The Capitals brought the fans out of their Verizon Center seats and to their feet an average of 3.04 times per game during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, and will look to replicate those goal scoring numbers—if not improve on them—this year.

Washington recorded goals-per-game averages of 3.86—when it led the league in scoring—2.66 and 2.76 since 2009-10, proving that scoring is a strength of the club.

Ovechkin was a Hart Trophy finalist last year, playing the second half of the truncated season with the kind of skill and flare for which he’s known around the NHL. Capitals tickets proudly bear his image as the face of the franchise, as he’s the main selling point when it comes to hockey in the mid-Atlantic region of the country.

The Capitals lost a hard-fought Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup in seven games to the division-rival New York Rangers last season. Motivation to return to the postseason will be high this year, and Washington will be given the chance to avenge that playoff series loss several times during the regular season. The Capitals and Rangers play each other four times as members of the Metropolitan Division in 2013-14.

Looking ahead, Washington Capitals tickets for the 2015 Winter Classic are sure to fetch astronomical prices, as all outdoor games seemingly do. In what’s become an annual NHL cash grab, the Capitals were awarded the Classic next season in which they’ll likely host another marquee team like the Rangers or Pittsburgh Penguins.

The major question this year, however, will be whether the Capitals can compete with higher caliber competition, as they’re no longer big fish in the small former Southeast Division pond. Washington had won six of the last seven division titles before the Southeast was dismantled as a result of the NHL’s offseason realignment.

Realignment or none, the Capitals are a potent offensive team with plenty of talent to match up with their new division rivals in the Eastern Conference. Whether the team will remains to be seen.

Washington Capitals tickets are in the highest demand as the Caps look to return to the postseason to make a run at the Stanley Cup. The Washington Capitals will face all of the Eastern Conference’s best down the stretch, including games against some of their biggest rivals. Southeast Division opponents include the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning and all of the top teams in the Eastern Conference will make a visit to Verizon Center to lock horns with the Washington Capitals. You’ll see great matchups like games against the arch rival Pittsburgh Penguins, with superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the powerhouse Boston Bruins, the New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers and more! When your Washington Capitals tickets get you into Verizon Center, you’re in for a show, as some of the world’s greatest athletes go toe-to-toe for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Washington Capitals are led by five-time all-star and two-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy-winner Alex Ovechkin, who has taken the NHL by storm with 339 goals in his first seven seasons. Alongside Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals boast one of the league’s top defensemen in Mike Green, slick forwards Mike Ribeiro and Nicklas Backstrom and a young superstar goaltender in Braden Holtby. Hall-of-Famer Adam Oates takes over this season as the Washington Capitals head coach, looking to lead the team to its sixth straight postseason appearance.
The Washington Capitals have long been a force in the NHL postseason, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 14 consecutive seasons from 1982-1996 and reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 1998. Since their first playoff appearance in 1982, the Caps have only missed the postseason six times in 29 seasons.
The Washington Capitals were founded in 1974 and played their home games at the Capital Centre until a moved to the Verizon Center in 1997, when it was known as the MCI Center.

Washington Capitals

With a Washington Capitals ticket, you're getting more than just a great ice hockey game. The Verizon Center (formerly MCI Center) is centrally located in downtown Washington, DC, just blocks away from the National Mall and its museums and monuments. Make sure you take some time before the game to take a stroll through the beautiful parks and avenues that make up the capital city of the United States. You certainly won't regret it.

The Star
Rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin, with his 52 goals, 54 assists and 106 points is the hottest rising star in the NHL. The young Russian was the number one overall draft pick in 2004, and ranked third overall in league scoring. An outstanding player in the Russian Superleague for Dynamo Moscow, he was the youngest player to lead the team in scoring and was named the Best Left Wing in the Superleague. Now, he's come to the NHL looking to prove his skills in the best professional hockey league in the world. He's simply amazing to watch on the ice. Don't miss out on your chance to see him play this season with Washington Capitals tickets!

The Coach
The Capitals did better than everyone expected last season. Credit head coach Glen Hanlon with the Capitals' surprise showing. Even though the Caps were consistently facing off against teams with more talent, Washington showed up prepared to play. Hanlon, in his second season, can turn this team around with his hard-working attitude. He's certainly a coach to watch, and Caps fans expect a lot from him. He's sure to exceed their high expectations.

The Team
Ovechkin can't carry the Caps by himself. Goalie Olaf Kolzig will help out a bit by minding the net. He's one of the most solid goalies in the league. The addition of Brian Pothier will help on the blue line, but this is a team still in construction. Will this be the year a leader emerges on the team and takes the Caps to the playoffs? With Hanlon behind the bench, things could definitely be a lot worse in Washington.

Washington Capitals info

Get your Washington Capitals tickets well in advance. Make sure your chinstrap is buckled, and head out to the MCI Center. The Washington Capitals have embarked on a youth movement, a rebuilding phase that threatens to rock the Southeast Division, as the Capitals re-load for a shot at the NHL Playoffs. Dealing their aging veterans in the off-season, Washington is banking on draft picks and prospects in the 2005-2006 NHL season, including Alexander Ovechkin, the first player selected in the Entry Draft, to provide Capitals ticket holders with a trip to the postseason.

Besides Ovechkin, the Capitals brought in Shane Morrison, a 2001 draft choice of the Boston Bruins to play defense. But the emphasis on youth hasn’t gone to the heads of management. The Capitals found time to sign some veterans to help in the rebuilding. A trade with the New Jersey Devils brought in Jeff Friesen, and center Andrew Cassels, formerly of the Columbus Blue Jackets, provides some experience at center. Keeping his position on the right side will be nine-year veteran Dainius Zubrus.

The Washington Capitals last challenged for a Stanley Cup in 1998. They began the year with a new head coach in Ron Wilson and a new arena, the MCI Center. A 40-30-12 record was good enough to finish in third place and give the Capitals a playoff berth. After disposing the Boston Bruins in six games, the Capitals advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals with a five-game series win over the Ottawa Senators. Washington got off to a slow start by dropping Game 1 to the Buffalo Sabres, but rebounded to win three straight, and finished off the Sabres with an overtime win in Game 6. The Stanley Cup Finals appearance though, ended up with the Capitals being swept by the Detroit Red Wings.

Don’t wait to get your Washington Capitals tickets. While the Capitals may be fielding a team of relative unknowns, there is plenty of potential and NHL stars waiting in the wings. The rebuilding process takes time, but there’s no reason the Capitals can’t challenge for a Southeast Division title with the mixture of youth and talent they’ll put on the ice in 2005-2006. The MCI Center and Washington Capitals tickets may be your first chance at seeing an NHL superstar emerge from the crowd.
